時は1950年代、英国コッツウォルズの田舎町にある教会の司祭、ブラウン神父は、時代遅れの大きな帽子と蝙蝠傘がトレードマークの風采の上がらない神父である。しかしひとたび事件が起こるや、聖職者ならではの鋭い洞察力を発揮して、警察も手を焼く難事件を次々に解決してゆく。
